Ingredients
Tofu – 14 ounces or 400 grams
Dark Soy Sauce- 1 Tbsp
Light Soy Sauce- 1 Tbsp
Rice Wine Vinegar- 2 tsp
Honey- 2 tsp
Sambal (or chili garlic sauce)- 1 1/2 tsp
Salt- 1/4 tsp + 1/4 tsp
Cornstarch- 2 Tbsp
Chili Flakes- 1/4 tsp
Oil- 2 tsp
Toasted Sesame Oil- 1 1/2 Tbsp
Ginger- 1 tsp
Red Onion- 1/2 cup
Toasted Sesame Seeds- 1 1/2 tsp
Green Onions- 1/4 cup
Instructions
1. Take 14 oz or 400 grams of extra firm tofu. After opening the package, drain the water completely and place it on a tray or a plate. Place a folded paper towel and heavy lid on the tofu for about 30 minutes to squeeze the extra moisture and water out of tofu. After 30 minutes, drain the water again and cut the tofu into cubes.
2. In the meantime, prepare the sauce. In a bowl, add 1 Tbsp of dark soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of light soy sauce, 2 tsp of rice wine vinegar, 1 1/2 tsp of sambal or any brand chili garlic sauce, and 1/4 tsp of salt. Mix everything well and set aside.
3. Now to the cubed tofu, add 2 Tbsp of cornstarch, 1/4 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of red chili flakes. Toss well to coat the tofu. Add 2 tsp of oil to coat the tofu. Bake it in the oven at @400 F for 15 minutes.
4. Set the heat to a medium-high temperature. In a wok or a pan, take 1 1/2 Tbsp of toasted sesame oil. Once the oil is hot, add 1 tsp of shredded ginger, 1/2 cup onions, 1 1/2 tsp toasted sesame seeds.
5. Add the prepared sauce and saute for 30 seconds. Add 1/4 cup of green onions and baked tofu and saute for additional 30 seconds.
6. Add Optional extra 1/2 Tbsp of soy sauce at this stage and mix well.
7. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds and green onions to garnish.
Notes
Extra-firm tofu works best for this recipe. Soft and firm tofu can break apart easily while cooking. Placing a heavy object or the lid on the tofu helps to take the moisture out and makes it crispier.
Tofu also tastes good if sauteed on the pan instead of baking before mixing it with the sauce. If chosen to stir fry, it should be preferably non-stick pan and more oil used as the moisture in the tofu can make it stick to the pan easily.
Adjust the salt and spice level (chili flakes and sambal) according to the taste.
Once prepared, it stores well in the refrigerator for a day.
