Watermelon Agua Fresca

Watermelon Agua Fresca is a combination of sweet watermelon, lime juice, salt, and mint. Adding a spice (black pepper) gives an extra kick to the drink. This drink is perfect for summer parties.

I have used a blender to blend all the ingredients with watermelon. However, to save time, using a hand blender works great! I have used mortar and pestle to crush the black peppercorns and mint together before blending. Although, this step is not necessary. There is no need to add sugar if the watermelon is sweet. It sometimes helps to balance out the flavor of black pepper and lime juice.

Agua Fresca translates to freshwater (refreshing or cooling water). It also means a cooler. Seasonal fruits work in place of watermelon to make agua fresca. Sometimes nuts and grains are also used. One such example of using grain is rice agua fresca (Horchata).

Black Peppercorns- 1 Tbsp

Mint- 4 Tbsp

Salt- ½ tsp

Sugar- 2 tsp (skip If the watermelon is sweet)

Lime Juice – From half a lime

Sugar Rim

Sugar- 4 tsp

Salt- ½ tsp

Serve

Ice Cubes

Instructions

1. Dice roughly about 6 cups of watermelon.

2. In a mortar and pestle, crush 1 Tbsp black pepper and 4 Tbsp mint coarsely.

3. Add 1/2 tsp of salt, 2 tsp of sugar, and lime juice from half a lemon.

4. Add everything to a blender and run it for a minute.

5. Strain the mixture.

6. To make a sugar rim for the glasses, take 4 tsp of sugar and 1/2 tsp of salt on a plate. Take some water in a bowl. Dip each glass into the water and then dip into the sugar/salt mixture. Coat all the glasses with a sugar rim.

7. Serve watermelon agua fresca with ice cubes, lime wedges, and mint leaves.

Notes

1. Agua Fresca does not store well for a long period in the refrigerator. Tastes better when served fresh or within 4 to 5 hours.

2. Some of the other fruits that can be used in place of watermelon are mangoes, honey drew and cantaloupe melons, pineapple, guava, or any seasonal fruit.

3. Lemon can be substituted for limes.
